Chapter 23

Claire sat with her back resting against the headboard of their bed with her legs extended out in front of her. She looked at Jake and smiled at the way he was carefully packing away the contents of their picnic dinner back into the wicker basket. Handing Claire a bottle of water, he smiled softly, making her heart flutter with the love that she felt for this man.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, angel.”

He stood and carried the basket over to the door and placed it beside it. Claire watched him silently, loving his romantic side. His plan to share this first night in their bedroom in such a wonderful way was more proof of his gentle and loving side that he had insisted wasn’t a part of his nature.

She looked around the room and was amazed that it was completely furnished with a high bureau for Jake, a lower wide bureau with a beautifully etched mirror above it for her, and a small loveseat covered in the blue and gold brocade fabric that they had chosen together. It was perfectly placed before the triple window that looked out over the front of their home and gave them such a spectacular view of McKade land.

There were two Victorian lamps made of white glass set on each of the end tables that were on either side of the bed. Small white doilies were beneath each lamp. Claire smiled at the feminine touch, knowing that Melanie had to have made the items for them.

“Everything is so beautiful,” she said softly, happy to see the smile that lit Jake’s face at her words. “I can’t believe you got all of this accomplished without my knowledge.”

“Everyone wanted to help,” Jake told her as he took his place beside her on the bed and rested his head on her lap as he positioned his body sideways so that he could look up at her. “All of the bathrooms are finished, too. All we have to do is finish painting the walls in the other bedrooms, the living room, and the dining room. The workers will be coming in next week to put down the rest of the carpets. The kitchen will be tiled by the end of the week.”

Claire looked down at him and smiled. It was good to see him so relaxed. Reaching down, she slid her left hand into the hair at his temple and slowly caressed his head, loving the feel of his silky hair between her fingers. She saw the way he closed his eyes and accepted her touch. His entire body was relaxed and satisfied.

“Is your leg hurting you at all, Jake?” she asked quietly.

“Nope.”

“I’m glad.”

“Me, too.” He opened his eyes, the crystal blueness of them sharp as he looked up at her. “My leg has been much better. I haven’t even been limping that much. Thank you for helping me get back to my old self, Claire.”

“That’s why you want me around,” Claire teased him. “You needed someone to massage your leg and help you get better.
